I already knew the Secret of Skull River!

I mentioned Tuesday finding a couple of books that I sort of had already, and today's the other: Conan the Barbarian #64, "The Secret of Skull River!" Story by Roy Thomas, from a plot by John Jakes, art by Jim Starlin and Al Milgrom. (I'm not sure Starlin did much more Conan, but why not?)

The cover of this issue features Belit, but the story doesn't: running behind, a reprint of the Conan story from 1974's Savage Tales #4 was colored and slotted in instead. I had first read it in 1988's reprint book Conan Saga #10, and most comic shops should be able to get you the Dark Horse Savage Sword reprints--but both of those are black-and-white as well, Conan #64 is the only place to read it in color.
The color isn't 100% necessary, yeah: it's a simple little tale with Conan visiting a village that is slowly being poisoned by an alchemist, who is also dabbling in the creation of giants...and a bit of a shaggy-dog punchline. I won't spoil it here, there's four damn versions of it floating around; you can find it! This one only cost me, um, twelve and a half cents...

  1. Wow, I didn't know Starlin did some Conan. Well drew, not wrote, but still...Seems Conan writing-wise, would be right up Starlin's alley.

Dig that front page though. It's like a throwback to those old 50's horror books from back in the day.
