David doesn't look like Doug McClure at all here.

Perhaps because this comic predates the movie, At the Earth's Core, by three years. Which sadly means no Caroline Munro, either. From 1973, Weird Worlds #4, featuring "Thuvia" From a novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, adapted by Marv Wolfman, pencils by Sal Amendola, inks by Joe Orlando; and "Jubal the Ugly One" From a novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, adapted by Denny O'Neil, art by Mike Kaluta.

I actually had seen that movie a few times even before the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode: as Max points out, "It's actually kind of fun!" This chapter in Pellucidar catches up to a plot point, as David Innes rescues Dian, who is still peeved over an earlier, unintentional insult; but also wants to protect David from Jubal, the ugly one, who had previously claimed her! Despite the title, we only see Ugg-o for one panel, the big fight would be next month.

In the John Carter feature, he and Tars Tarkas meet Thuvia, and they team up with her and her pet Tharks against the Therns. Revenge on the Therns would have to wait, though, since they're under attack by the Black Pirates! The trio kill their way through both of them and escape to the next chapter, still in search of Dejah Thoris, who herself was searching for John.

Over the years we've seen #3, and #6, but I only need to get to Weird Worlds #7: both John Carter and Pellucidar serials end there. The next three issues were Howard Chaykin's Ironwolf. They dropped the "Tarzan presents" there, too.

  1. What was the insult because goddamn that Dian sure can hold a grudge.

  2. He slugged a guy to protect her, not realizing in her culture fighting for a woman was basically a marriage proposal, so she felt snubbed.
