Despite my love of the source material, I didn't buy the tie-in Justice League Unlimited comic anywhere near often enough; usually only on the strength of the guest-stars, like the Question or the Creeper or Booster and Beetle. Today, as sometimes happens, I liked the cover more than the story: from 2005, Justice League Unlimited #12, "Old School" Written by Adam Beechen, pencils by Carlo Barberi, inks by Walden Wong.

Even though he never appeared in the cartoon, this issue features the golden age Flash, Jay Garrick; as a bratty, bratty kid is not impressed by "an old man who wishes he was as cool as the Flash!" Meanwhile, the current Flash, and the rest of the Justice League, has been captured by the Mirror Master! Most of the team is trapped in their transporter, while MM captures Wally himself; but Wally reaches through the Speed Force to Jay for help. Like the brat, Mirror Master isn't impressed by old Flash either; but he's able to work through his tricks and free Wally, and together they clobber MM. Jay asks Wally for a favor, though: showing up that mouthy kid...

This one wasn't as fun as some, and I'm not sure the JLU Wally ever had a mentor like Jay or Barry. He acted like he was raised by wolves most of the time...

  1. I'm also VERY guilty of this myself since those issue seem to be better-written and more of a delight to read then the current shit flooding the stores. The art was pretty decent and the writing seems top notch. I like the premise here, and the inclusion of Jay is never a bad thing. Fucking punk kids. Hope he got showed up REAL good.

  2. Agreed. Glad they were able to include Jay, since they got blocked on the show and had to change the Justice Society people into the Justice Guild.
