There are probably more than a few pros and cons to it, but I've seen a few claims that it would be cheaper, easier, and safer to just make the subways free; than it is to police turnstile jumpers and whatnot. I imagine the police unions have something to say about that. Like 'no.' Anyway, I have no idea how hard it actually is to find a cop in NYC, but they won't find one here for a bit.

I only visited Boston for two days on 2010, so I can't say much over the other, than it's easier than ever to pay for turnstiles. lIke self-check out easy, so there's no excuse to jump turnstiles other than you're a anarchists/survivalist who refuses to support or fund any form of government.
