This book is full of swears, this post was almost full of them too.

So the other day (about 30 seconds ago, as I type this) I mentioned I'm still goddamned pissed at Warren Ellis. I don't know if there's anything he could possibly do to make amends to the people he hurt, but I also know he's halfassed even trying. He's gotten work again in recent years--I have some copies of the Batman's Grave that I've fished from quarter bins but haven't been able to bring myself to read yet. I also still hate that he wrecked Transmetropolitan for me; since I think "I Hate It Here" every day. ("Journalism is just a gun," but most outlets nowadays seem to be putting it in their own mouths.) But, I pulled this one out of a dollar bin the other day: from 2010, Vertigo Resurrected #1, featuring "Shoot" Written by Warren Ellis, pencils by Phil Jimenez, inks by Andy Lanning.
This was the infamous school-shooting issue of Hellblazer, that was pulled in 1999 after the Columbine shootings: it would have been Hellblazer #141. Ellis would leave the title early, at #143; but I'm pretty sure he took his unused plots and folded them into Strange Kisses at Avatar, where he would do a couple limited series and an ongoing featuring "combat magician" William Gravel; who, to be blunt, is a less conflicted, less pretty, Constantine with guns. (I don't fault Ellis for this, honestly: there's some book on the shelves right now that I swear is G.I. Robot with the serial numbers filed off...)
Son of a...just opening to the second page, and it refers to a school shooting in Spokane, where I currently live! Obviously I haven't read this recently. A parent drops their son off at school, taping it for their birthday, thus catching another student shooting him without warning, then killing himself. Psychiatrist Penny Carnes is investigating school shootings for the government; between that and listening to tapes from Jonestown I'm worried for her two pages in. She notices something on the tape, though; a face that appears at several other shootings: John Constantine. She tries to get a file on him, and while she gets the name, the file is restricted. But, when she returns to her office for her tape recorder (1999!) John's there, for a meeting. He'd started investigating the shootings himself, at a friend's request, after his son had been killed. John asks Penny if she's getting anywhere, and he knows damn well she isn't. He knows everyone's looking for a reason, something to blame, like video games or violent movies or rap music or food coloring, something; but John thinks those kids are already so broken by the world all they can do is sit there and wait for the bullet. He replays a tape with a kid with a gun in his face and tells Penny to look closely: she sees the kid mouth "shoot."

Since I try not to swear on the blog, I had to edit my original response; but that was nihilistic, try-hard edgy crap. Few people think clearly with a gun in their face, but even in America today I think most kids want to live. I don't remember thinking real deeply about this one before, but I don't think I hated it the way I do now. Getting old. And while I knew this wasn't going to have a fix, Constantine wasn't going to find that the shootings were caused by Neron or some nonsense, it's crap that he gets a tirade about the futility of looking for something to blame, before giving another something to blame.
Also this issue: a ton of shorts from Vertigo limited series like Strange Adventures, Heartthrobs, Weird War Tales, and Flinch. (OK, Flinch wasn't a limited, but even so.) The selections bring a laundry list of big names for the cover, but in keeping with the theme most of them aren't the cheeriest stories. (Scan from "The Kapas" by Brian Bolland.)

I'm enjoying the show more than this series; but that could just be me.

As usual, when the Comic Book Shop puts a whole series in the dollar bin, I'm pretty much obliged to pick it up. Like today's book! Hellblazer Special: Bad Blood, written by Jamie Delano, art by Phillip Bond. It took me a bit to find any bits I could scan without swears...

Set in 2025, John Constantine is still alive, and gets involved in a royal scandal...that doesn't do much for me, since even though I enjoy the hell out of the usual British pop culture nonsense like Dr. Who, Judge Dredd, and Monty Python, I have barely a nodding acquaintance with the politics of Britain and their royal family. Some Brits...like the monarchy, some don't? Ah, I don't know. And so I can't tell how much of this is supposed to be jokes, and how much is supposed to be pointed commentary. (Like how quickly monarchists would turn if their heir apparent wasn't lily white...) So this wasn't my cup of tea, as it were, but hey! Phillip Bond art! Always worth flipping through.

Constantine's looking for, um, "Holdin' Caulfield."

Keeping in mind I'm not a huge Swamp Thing or Hellblazer fan, I'm still 95% sure there's at least one story where Swamp Thing gives John marijuana. Something they probably couldn't get away with in the new 52 versions of the characters, yeah. Over at the Hurting, Tim O'Neil has a pretty good post about DC's current house style, where John Constantine and Captain Marvel can crossover, but the charm and innocence of "Shazam" and the dark humor and adult nature of Constantine have both been diluted. Which brings to mind the old saw about mixing ten gallons of ice cream and ten gallons of manure...well, not that either Captain Marvel or Hellblazer were manure by themselves, but maybe you get my point.

Oddly enough, as Tim also pointed out, the Masters of the Universe are going to be crossing over with the Justice League and Justice League Dark; and dear lord, they don't call themselves 'Justice League Dark' in-story, do they? Sounds like a bad M&M flavor. I usually give Keith Giffen a lot of rope, but the new 52 designs and unnecessary and terrible redesigns in the same vein for the He-Man characters...I don't know.

In other news, Masters of the Universe Classics Moss Man was a 2010 figure, that I just picked up at Big Lots recently; and he still has his pine-scent. Like, a lot. Super-piney.

"Sleepless."

I figure Deadman's always able to ghost into different houses and catch up on whatever's on TV; but playing video games might be a little more problematic. And I don't know if I'd want to live in Constantine's body, either.

Zatanna actually pulls that spell on John in Totems, a Vertigo one-shot. At a New Year's Eve party--1999!--a visibly soused John is a little more forward than he is here; and Zatanna isn't having it. Dig it up!

"Constantine's Bargain."

As an American, I don't think I should even be allowed to pretend to write Hellblazer. Constantine, maybe. I think I had the idea for this one before I got the figure on eBay; then had to make sure I won one. I didn't read Hellblazer regularly at all; but a friend had the first two or three issues...which came out when I was in high school.

The "Dr. Death" John refers to? None other than the real Dr. Death, Dr. Jack Kevorkian! I honestly forget where I read or saw this--possibly 60 Minutes?--where Kevorkian would, as after-dinner conversation, lead discussion to try and guess the center of consciousness, and he would argue his was based out of his left hand.

The devil in today's strip is 2001's Chaos Comics Dark Alliance Lucifer figure, who still holds up pretty well. Wish I remembered where the cigarettes and the lighter came from, though...

"Reuse, reuse, and recycle."

Got John Constantine a week or two back, and I've got a strip planned with him for Wednesday. Without the "Trenchcoat Brigade," I'm afraid.

Rorschach, the Question, Constantine, and Commissioner Gordon aren't all the same body; but pretty close.
