"Stifle."

And that's a wrap for the Collector, and some of our Spider-friends! Maybe not all of them, though. I was also kind of hoping to keep Kurt in this costume for a bit, for a change coming hopefully in August...

The Hulkiverse and the Riderverse maybe aren't in regular continuity, but also feel like just a matter of time: I know there's a bunch of Venomverse stuff already. Some of those Hulks we haven't seen here before, but I bought the new Red She-Hulk a bit ago, and still haven't opened her: I really do like the old one! This is more of a space concern, but I've also bought the last two Legends Ghost Riders that came with their bikes, and haven't opened them either. The upcoming Robbie Reyes is short his Hellcharger, which will doubtless lead to still more 'Ghost Walker' jokes; but I'm looking forward to that wave and expanding Alpha Flight.

Also, if the Riderverse included not just Ghost Riders but Kamen Riders; that'd be a bit of alright! The Masked Rider there was a recent model pick-up; although I have a Shin Kamen Rider coming. I haven't actually seen Masked Rider--I believe there was an attempt to localize it, back in the Fox Kids days, that might have gone way younger and jokier than Mighty Morphin Power Rangers shows did. That didn't really seem to stick, and Kamen Rider maybe hasn't broken big in the states, but there's been a ton of versions, and some of the costumes get way out there.

And, it's long been established, the Hulk likes beans! Like, a lot.

"Contract."

How do you get a bunch of super-powered egomaniacs to play in your little fight games? Honestly, it's probably easier to take Grandmaster and Collector's route here, and just give them stupid crap that they want. Mind control is risky: they'll turn on you if they get free, and it also might dull their game. Hostages and threats will only get you so far, especially if you're also taking hostages and threatening the other players. Care and feeding of hostages, plus keeping track of who you threatened with what; what a hassle! The only other aspect that comes to mind would be overly competitive types, that will fight for glory and love of the game; like the Champion, or Power Princess if she doesn't stop to think about it.

"Purgatory Island" is of course a riff on Wonder Woman's Paradise Island, although I'm not 100% sure Power Princess means it: she might allow some men, as cooks and servants and such. They may or not be castrati, depending upon how she feels at time of hire...I don't think Hyperion has ever been shown to have a Supergirl-style cousin, but we've made that joke a couple times here, as well as alluded that Power Princess does not buy that story at all. In case it's not obvious, I find the Princess fun! She would probably be around more, if she stood a little better: Sat is a much better 'actress' in these strips. Very stable, always hits her marks, rarely topples over. That said, that Satana figure is what, from 2013? I had started this plotline with maybe the idea of swapping the figure with Spider-Woman, who per OAFE.net uses the same body. Just to have a back-up plan...

Also, we finally see the 'guy' Spider-Man 2099 had been trying to get back: Spider-Hulk! One of the shrinking number of Toy Biz figures to not get a remake yet and still look good. Miguel seemed to want to rescue him pretty badly, but Pavitr seems less enthused...

The collected Spider-people were remarkably co-operative for this one! Usually, somebody'll take a header, and knock out a ton besides; but they actually stayed put until the next morning. Here's another angle:

I put Spider-Man 3 on Netflix and sorted my assorted Spidey figures, spare heads and hands, into a bigger bin. Aside from a few multiples, I think I got all of them in there, except for the old costume Spider-Woman. Got the new one half-off from GameStop last week, which got me a hair closer to finishing the Lizard. And I need to take a look, but I think she has the same head as Mockingbird, but with black hair and different colored shades; a trick Hasbro does every so often that works pretty well.

Wish I remembered how I balanced that...

Just a quick one: I had wanted to set this up for a while, a meeting of the disappointing DCIH Superman (not a great sculpt, not overly poseable, overall super-blah) and the slightly-less disappointing Doomsday from the pre-DC Universe Classics Superman line. Doomsday looks nice, but is just out-of-scale with the DCUC figures; he probably needed to be at least an inch and change taller and wider. So, I thought maybe he'd look better with a smaller Superman...

And I gotta say...not quite. Now Doomsday's too big, isn't he? And without looking at The Death of Superman, just from memory, wasn't Doomsday beefier? Well, worth a try.

In other news, the other day I got another DCIH Weaponer of Qward, bringing my squad total to six. Really need to look into getting the poor guys some weapons...

I used my wife's Secret once, and the same thing happened to my armpits.
This is...

A. An example of differences in scale between toy lines.

B. Two nice toys, but two characters that should probably never appear in comics again.

C. Comics Code-enforced spandex. Which is probably just as well, really.

D. "When Plot Contrivances Clash!"

Previously, before going off on a rant about God, 06-06-06, and Satan; I mentioned sending my long-suffering wife on a wild goose chase for Vampire Batman, as not seen in stores. After I told her it would be available at the comic shop later in December, she called and had them set one aside for her. (If your comic shop doesn't do this, find another one!) I'm lucky that she did, as I think Vampire Batman sold pretty quickly out of that wave of toys.

Let's try to break this down for the non-toy buyer: say you like chunky peanut butter. Now, let's say your grocery store bought peanut butter the same way many outlets get toys: per case. The case assortment may vary, depending on the relative popularity of chunky. Say out of a case of a dozen, there were 6 plain, 3 chunky, and 2 lowfat. That's only 11, right? Say the last one is the chase--the more rare, hard to find one. Maybe extra chunky. The chase could be something specifically designated as such, or could just be "short-packed."
Ideally, the hardcore fan will buy the plain, chunky, lowfat, and the chase if available. More casual fans may pick up the chunky and the lowfat that are left, and the remaining plain would be picked up by the general man-in-the-street. Using Mattel's recent DC Heroes case, Superman would be plain, Bizarro chunky, Supergirl lowfat, and Doomsday extra chunky. Traditionally, particularly with Mattel, the main hero will be much more prevalent than the villains, and girl action figures will be more rare.

In the real world, things get sticky, and I don't mean Goober Grape. What the hell is that stuff? No, toy speculators, or "scalpers," will often pillage the short-packed, more rare toys. Sometimes, the staff may take "first dibs" on new stock as well. So, to keep our peanut butter example going, you get to the store, and there's 5 plain and 1 lowfat left on the shelf. No chunky for you, until the store orders or puts out a new case. When will that be? Well, that depends. Is it a high traffic item? Will they sell these six peanut butters left, or would a new case be picked the same way, leaving the retailer stuck with ten plain?

The most recent example I can think of for this was Star Wars: Force Battlers. The first assortment was Darth Vader, General Grievous, Obi-Wan, and Anakin. Vader disappeared immediately, and most of the Grievous were soon gone as well, leaving peg after peg of Obi-Wan and Anakin. I never saw them drop in price or go on clearance, so I'm not sure what happened to them all, but they were there for a long stretch.

It's a stereotype to refer to the scalpers as fat, ill-kempt, Comic Book Guy looking bastards. The fact is, it's a business opportunity, and some are making the most of it. For most toys, there are other options. Scalping usually occurs in mass-market outlets like Walmart, so if it's available at a website or comic shop, you have a better chance of requesting an item held for you. Lastly, although most toys will be rare at first and then clogging the shelves a few months later, ebay is always an option. There's also a little more competition on ebay than you would get at a scalper's toy store: even if only four scalpers have put the same toy up for bids, you'll get a better deal there than you possibly could at the scalper's "brick-and-mortar" store where the overhead is higher.
