ACAB (and one is a robot.)

It's overtime season for me once again, and I'm working it in smaller chunks because I'm so bored. Which leaves me a little short on time this week, but we luck out with a great book right next to me: from 2014, That's Because You're A Robot #1, written by David Quantick, art by Shaky Kane.

I feel like there should be much more of these, but this is another fun one-shot from Shaky Kane, with a deceptively simple premise: two cops, Jeff and Matt, are told one of them was a real human, the other a robot...but they didn't know which was which! Despite the fact that I think that should raise even more questions, this kind of does a number on the cops' working relationship, as they spend the rest of the issue rather gently accusing the other of being the robot. They were partners and buddies, so it doesn't come to gunplay or fisticuffs, just a lot of "no, you are" while their work suffers a bit: other stuff is going on, but you can understand how they're a bit preoccupied.

Man, I wish I had a massive budget and production house, since I would love this as a TV show, especially with all of Kane's weird background stuff. Just a half-hour of gunplay and accusations every week, with only the leads unchanging: the setting, format, supporting cast, costumes, everything else different every episode, but Jeff and Matt still arguing away: "I cut myself shaving, Matt; how could I be the robot?" "Maybe you used the electric razor, Jeff." "...maybe you're too stupid to be the robot, Matt." Read more!

Mmm, that's good comics!

Damn good stuff, but I'm not sure where you could read it right this very second! From 2022-2023, Weird Work #1-3, written by Jordan Thomas, art by Shaky Kane.

I got three issues, some prints, and a coaster for backing the third issue on Kickstarter, but this didn't appear to be available on Burnt Barn Comics now. I'm hoping it gets a domestic printing from Image or something later, because it's good stuff! The hook is basically L.A. Confidential in a world like Futurama, but that might be underselling it: the plot is nice and twisty, and Shaky Kane draws everything weird. I just got it in the mail this afternoon and tore right through it. Super recommended!

Come to think of it, I think I have another Kickstarter package, that I should've torn into earlier, but I was looking to see if I got a digital copy. Well, either way, we'll get to that next!

This'll be a quick one, since it's not the kind of book you can really break the plot down on, but it's also the kind you should grab whenever you can! From 2017, A Bulletproof Coffin One-Shot: the 1000 Yard Stare" Written by David Hine, art by Shaky Kane.

The team of Hine and Kane was no more, having sold out to Big 2 Publishing; but having burned through his payout "like a true red-blooded American...on booze, blow, blackjack and broads" Kane had been approached by Image Nation for a new book, which leads to him on the convention circuit. It's not as much fun as it sounds! We also check out his ashcan edition of "Hypno Vampires from the Stars," a Coffin Fly adventure.

This is where I'll heave one of my infrequent sighs at not being better organized; as I can't recall if I had this already, but I jumped on it when I found it in the dollar bins! I know I have the first Bulletproof Coffin in trade, but did I collect the second in singles...? Also need to make a note, I haven't read the Beef yet. Read more!
