It's kind of less "versus" than "babysits" this time around...

I usually read the first Batman vs. Predator maybe once a year, but I hadn't gotten to this one: from 2007, Superman and Batman versus Aliens and Predator, written by Mark Schultz, art by Ariel Olivetti.

By this point, I think there had been three BvsP series, Superman vs. Predator, both of them separately versus Aliens, and a JLA vs. Predator; so Supes and Bats are kind of "ugh, these guys." A volcano in the Andes is about to blow, but it's also secretly the home to a tribe of Predators that had crashed on earth during the ice age, and hating cold they set up shop in the volcano. These Preds are kind of throwbacks: while they still have the ship and the weapons, they do not appear to have completely fetishized the ritual of hunting like the other ones we've seen. Don't read too much into their anthropology, though, the Preds still had an Alien hive, for weekend hunting or whatever. Maybe they were milking them, I don't know.

With a paranoid government agency throwing a fit about it, Supes and Bats (and Lois, who is delightfully chill with her husband's weird work friend) get the Predators and the Aliens into the Fortress of Solitude, so they can get them on their way back home. Somewhat predictably, none of them co-operate in the slightest. Batman may have lost a bit of patience here: he tells Supes at one point, he's sworn never to take a human life. He may be snarking a little, but that may be a dick thing to say to Superman with his wife right there. Superman, who claims to have maybe lost a step a couple times here, is largely on top of things; freezing the xenomorph eggs for transport: he doesn't like them, but feels they must play a part in the grand scheme of the universe. Or something. I respectfully disagree; but they get the job done. And with Ariel Olivetti art, it's a pretty book: I got it on a buy one/get one deal, I wonder what the other book was...

"Skull."

Ooh, forgot to add any commentary! Well, let's see...NECA had some Predator figures a while back (I think they're on like their eighteenth wave or so, albeit with some clever reuse and repaints) that came with various skulls for a display of the trophy wall from Predator 2. I had a few assorted loose skulls, but instead went with Predator taxidermy and a pterodactyl skeleton from a vending machine. Those dinosaur skeletons are a lot of fun with silly putty: instant fossils! Not that I'm doing that at my desk at work...Also, the "Predator blood" on Pool's knife is from a highlighter borrowed from the Wife!

Have Wolverine and Kraven met, in proper Marvel continuity? I wanted to say yeah, but I'm not positive. Of course Kraven would look down his nose at Logan, because he probably assumes with mutant powers and claws, being the great white hunter would be cake. Kraven ignores the fact that if he went through what Logan had, he'd be even more of a drooling psychotic.

"Bug Hunt."

Man, I need a Predator figure...I splurged this weekend on the Jungle Extraction Dutch figure from NECA, and it's a right proper figure! Great articulation, paint, and sculpt; for about the same price as a Marvel Legend or DCUC figure--maybe cheaper! Absolutely worth picking up.

The bit about the animals on Rann being confused by bright colors, is from Grant Morrison's story in the DC Comics Presents: Mystery in Space issue. I don't know if Rann has shown up in the New 52 yet, but I'm kind of worried it's filled with aliens and predators like, well, Aliens and Predators; as opposed to the weird charm it used to have.

One 45-minute bathroom break later...

We've actually had a scan from this issue before some time ago, but here's another couple from Batman versus Predator III #4, written by Chuck Dixon, pencils by Rodolfo Damaggio, inks by Robert Campanella. Actually, in the above panel Batman's stopping a bit of bleeding, so the Predator doesn't follow the blood trail.

But even though Batman and Robin (Tim) and Alfred face-off against a father-son Predator hunt; I was just noting the look at the Batcave, where most of the last issue took place. Heck, the Predator even squats on the giant penny on the cover, too. As far as the actual fights go this issue, eh, it seems a little anticlimactic since Bats has fought the Preds twice before and totally has their number now: he knows they don't like cold, and has a certain villain with a cold gun...

This is a good one to wrap up my vacation week; since I always read the first Batman vs. Predator every year at my parents' place! Have a good weekend, I should be back around Monday!

Other people's posts and contests, and why don't I have a Predator figure?

Pete over at Fanwank has a contest going, with a Legendary Heroes Conan vs. Wrarrl two-pack up for grabs! (Huh. I was able to spell 'Wrarrl' correctly off the top of my head. Wouldn't have bet on that one, and now my mind's wandering to old Conan comics I probably had stolen twenty years ago...) Pete is having a lot of fun, with a lot of toys I never even saw in my neck of the woods. No spoilers, but check it out and put your Superman knowledge to work!

And Poe Ghostal has the third part of a Batman vs. Predator series up, and he features a very logical guest-villain who's more than up for some Predator smashing. I know there were three B. vs. P. limited series in the comics, before snowballing into Superman/Batman/Alien/Predator, but I haven't read all of them. In fact, although I love the first one, the only issue I could find the other day was part four of the third series. Pretty sure Huntress was in the second one, but the third features Robin.
This is at least the third time Batman's worn the anti-Predator armor, so that's pretty much in the regular rotation.
Would Batman tell Alfred to shut up, under any circumstances? And did all Predators wear...thongs? I didn't care for Bat's helmet in this one either: too Robocop. And all of this is making me sad that I don't seem have a single Predator figure. Weird. I have more than a few Aliens, but then, Aliens, like zombies or stormtroopers or Borg, look even better if you have a pile of them. Which reminds me of something I should dig up, so later.

Ooh, almost forgot: Page from Batman vs. Predator 3, written by Chuck Dixon, pencils by Rodolfo Damaggio, inks by Robert Campanella. Read more!
