There's maybe some in-universe inspiration for this one: way back in Amazing Spider-Man #69, I think the Kingpin gets nicked in a surprisingly hands-on robbery of an ancient tablet. That was pretty much the last time he exposed himself to the law for years, but it might have seemed out-of-character for him even then.
