Unless I'm thinking of another Black Knight book--and Marvel's thrown that one at the wall a few times the last few years--there were some criticisms that the Avengers were acting like total jerks to Dane in an earlier issue. There may be reasons, though, as the Ebony Blade has started pulling some new tricks out of its scabbard: Dane is killed earlier, but as long as he's holding the Blade when he dies, he will come back. Elsa Bloodstone gets involved, along with young Arthurian scholar Jacks, who has visions of a disturbing Camelot and realizes Mordred is responsible for at least some of their problems.
While Elsa fights a "bloodfae redcap" and some "gore elementals," Mordred and Dane mix it up for a bit before being entranced by ghostly visions: Mordred of his father King Arthur and his approval, Dane of Sersi, Cap, and lost love Ashima. (Who may have been new for this series, I think he'd lost a couple love interests over the years.) Meanwhile, Jacks is shown a vision, of "Kamaelot," as the young Thor puts it, facing off against Sir Percy! Thor thinks the Black Knight is no match for him, and talked a bit of trash; but that hate made the Knight stronger: Percy manages to knock out Thor, then murders his Vikings, as Merlin's familiar wipes Thor's memory. (I know we saw some time back another Black Knight retcon, that Percy wasn't Percy, but his twin brother Richard? But Black Knight may be like the Inhumans: there's a few stories everybody's read with them, nobody had read all of them, so stuff falls through the cracks, or there's pick-and-choose continuity. Whichever.)
With Mordred rejecting Arthur's approval, real or fake, Elsa is forced to blow Dane's head off with a shotgun to shake him out of it. Mordred is driven off, but things are still going to plan, as after he recovers Dane drinks from the Ebony Chalice, for the gift of understanding, which may involve more unpleasant truths than he's willing to face...
This series may have been building off...ah, what was that crossover with Knull? Oh, King in Black, that was it. The new status for the Ebony Blade was that it took negative emotions to power it up: a friendly, cheerful Dane would be less than useless; while a bitter and troubled one had immense power. Dane knows that's not ideal for long term mental health, but doesn't have a workaround yet. Still doesn't quite explain the Avengers being kind of dicks, though; although some of what I've read of Jason Aaron's run does give them the feel of the cool kids' table...Spurrier also wrote Way of X, another book where there was something there, but just didn't quite all come together? He may be getting there, though. Also, unintentionally a very British last week or so! I'm not organized enough to have planned any of that.

The only Ashima I remember was from the Heroes Return mini-series. She was a Dreaming Celestial that sacrificed herself so that the heroes could return to their universe. She befriended Franklin in that series & helped him help the heroes. Can't be the same one right? Oh wait it's not after reading up on it.
