The Twentieth Annual! Random Happenstance, Year in Toys!

Twenty years seems like an absurd amount of time to be doing about anything, but here we are! Another year, another...big pile of action figures assembled seemingly at random. Let's get into it!

For new readers: For years now, I have been keeping a running total of every action figure or toy I buy. Hopefully, each entry has the figure's name, the line, the price, and where I bought it; and possibly a link to a cartoon or strip that toy was used in. (Unless that figure's unloved or unphotogenic, I guess. Or I'm lazy...) Totals will usually include postage and tax. Usually. Any prices or totals listed in parentheses were purchased with store credit or points instead of paying money, and aren't counted towards the actual total spent. This is by no means a "Best of" list or anything, just what I bought. Usually, right about here would be maybe the Build-a-Figures (and such) completed during the course of the year; but some of my stuff is in storage right now. This year we finished the Cassie "Stature" Lang BaF, as well as new ones Nemesis (aka Holocaust) and Executioner; as well as the more basic/lower price point Spinmaster Superman-Robot. That's a pretty light year for that! Although there's a few like Dragon Man and Gargantos (Shuma-Gorath!) that maybe could've or should've been.

Next, what have we learned? I don't know if this is because of limited time or space, or eyeing future resale, but there's a fair chunk on this list that has not been opened yet. I'd say about half of the McFarlane figures I bought, sure; but there are still several Marvel Legends unopened: Kaine, Spider-Man Unlimited, that Ghost Rider set, even Maximum Deadpool. And Bert and Ernie, and the new Star Wars Black Holiday figures: those last two were definitely for time, but still.

There's also some figures that, frankly, I got a bit gouged on. That Mondo Nightcrawler is so fancy, and well done; but also way overpriced, even compared to earlier figures in that line: I think there may have been some tariff on it, or somebody maybe thought there was going to be some tariff on it and baked that into the price. (Previous figures in the line maybe also got free shipping!) I bought a couple Masters of the Universe figures that were marked down, but I still had to buy a membership to get...that was dumb. And I was on vacation and missed the Marvel Legends Savage Land set, so I overpaid for Shanna on the aftermarket--Savage Land Rogue was a steal by comparison. And Wal-Mart cancelled my preorder for Spider-Man '77, to gouge ten more bucks outta me.

And what does the future hold? I was pleasantly surprised to get the Uncanny Spider-Man early: I wasn't expecting it until February. Probably some more Marvel Legends, certainly, although with a little luck we'll get some cheaper, rather than brand-new fear-of-missing-out figures. Pretty sure there's a Mezco 1:12 Nightcrawler coming later, so that'll run me a few bucks. I should try to remember: I think I've enjoyed about every G.I. Joe Classified figure I've picked up, but McFarlane is running 50-50 at best.

As always, best of luck for all of you next year; toy hunting, living, whatever!

As happens here and there, I had to go back and add some figures that I could see on my shelves, but didn't remember entering, like the Yip Yip Martians! And the spare Death's Head I ordered: I wanted him right away, and ordered from two different places to see which got here first. And...I don't remember which got here first, and the box I opened was actually in better shape than the second one, so I have to transplant him...just making work for myself at this point.

This seemed like a bit of a down year as far as Build-a-Figures: we finished Mojo and Totally Awesome Hulk, both from years past; then from this year Zabu and Blackheart. Still, there were a couple like the Super-Adaptoid and Lockjaw that surprisingly weren't Build-a-Figures.

So, what, if anything, have we learned this year? Feels a little less expensive than usual, but there wasn't a big HasLabs Sentinel or Galactus this year: I know I sprung for Dragon Man, but I don't think I was charged for him yet. (We'll count him whenever he turns up!) That One: 12 Shadow figure was the most expensive thing I got this year: it's really nice, but also has a lot of extras I'm not currently using anyway. I went all-in on Zabu and Blackheart: I'm going to be really mad if Zabu is available separately later (or worse, with Shanna) since I didn't love Red Widow or Black Winter...although, that Cable's maybe winning me over. Blackheart himself was a bit disappointing: his tail takes up a ton of room. I don't know if that Brother Voodoo figure is any different than that last one? And modern/red armor Dracula...is not my preferred look, no.

Couple of figures there, Count Nefaria, maybe even the two packs (Rogue/Destiny, Crystal/Lockjaw, and Sersi/Black Knight) I probably could've held out and possibly got for cheaper. Maybe not a lot, but it might be worth it to try and stretch that dollar next year; assuming things don't completely go to crap and buying toys is still a not-unreasonable concern. But...I'm still having fun! I won't say who, but there's a figure I got early in the year, that I had zero ideas for until today! There were also a couple figures that haven't been in homemade posts yet, because we're still in the "Seasonal Affective D'Spayre" storyline: it's mildly concerning that a storyline (sorta) about depression has been running for three months now, and that I could end up with more D'spayre figures before it's over!

I still have a few figures unopened, I think I'll knock off now and see about that.

The Eighteenth Annual, Random Happenstance, Year in Toys!

Eighteen years of this, and it still surprises me every time! Not just "wow, I bought a ton of crap" but a lot of "that was this year?" March 2023 might as well be the Eisenhower administration. But, the toys remain, so here we are!

Catch-up, missed: Power Rangers Pudgy Pig, $5.99, Pirantishead, $5.99; total $11.98, Ross. I'm pretty sure I bought a full-price ML Yondu at Target for $24.99, and should probably include the HasLabs Giant-Man here, that's $235.42 shipped, whenever it turns up.  Helena Shaw from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny wasn't in my Target purchase history; so must've been from GameStop? Say, $18.74. And I missed the Rose! We had him mid-November, for say $19.99.

Total: $3565.82. 2022: $3604.09.  2021: $3449.00. 2020: $2345.67. 2019: $2472.30. 2018: $1752.31. 2017: $1968.71. 2016: $1753.72. 2015: $1895.35. 2014: $1523.25. 2013: $1101.93. 2012: $706.32. 2011: $564.71. 2010: $966.10. 2009: $558.16. 2008: $555.16. 2007: $426.00. 2006: $620.00.

And what have we learned this year? That my meticulous and unimpeachable record-keeping has slipped a bit; partly because of pre-orders: if I pre-order something in September and it shows up in April, where did I log it? Split the difference and log it nowhere! That's not helpful, but we'll keep working on that; although I'm already worried I'm going to find an extra couple hundred I somehow missed after I post this.

Also, a lot of figures were either $25.99, or six bucks; depending when they were purchased. Sure, personally six bucks is better, but is that sustainable? There are seemingly less and less places to get figures every year, even if it seems like I buy from a bunch of stores; and I don't want that number to go down. And of course some figures, you kinda know you can maybe hold out on, but you can't rely on that for every character. Or, a lot of figures probably wouldn't have gotten bought at all at regular price.

For this year's Build-a-Figures, Puff Adder, Ch'od, What If? Ultron, movie Attuma, the Hydra Stomper, and the Void; and from McFarlane we have Atrocitus. We also have a passable chunk of the Indiana Jones Grail Table, with assorted grails false and true. Puff is part of Hasbro's incredibly slow rollout of the Serpent Society. Ultron and Attuma were clearance miracles; as was the Hydra Stomper, but after his episode I'm glad that happened. Atrocitus isn't bad for a McFarlane figure; but even as a 'Collect-n-Connect' or whatever he should've come with a lantern, or Dex-Starr, or both.  Ch'od (and Cr'reee!) is a rock star; so great. And the Void is a different direction than I thought we'd get for him; a good sized and horrible monster.

What does the new year hold? As usual, no idea! I maybe have two or three pre-ordered figures pending and one in the mail right now. I was also kind of mad at Hasbro, for general corporate shenanigans; then of course they announced a new Nightcrawler figure, and I'll probably buy three. (And a Goblin Queen!)
